Feta Cheese - A protected product of Name of Origin

14 October 2002: The European Commission after the failure of the Agriculture Council of June 2002 finally included the Greek Feta to the protected products of Name of Origin with the1107/96/EC Regulation. The inclusion of feta to the regulation provisions practically means that after 5 years since regulation's entry in force the name "Feta Cheese" will be used exclusively by the Greek producers.

The producers/preparators from other countries than Greece should go after a new name for their cheeses.
The last "battle" for the feta protection was given in June 2002 during the works of the Agriculture Council in which the 15 Member States of the European Union cannot agreed in any decision concerning the consolidation or not of the name "Feta Cheese". This fact obliged the Commission to adopt itself its proposal through the so-called "written procedure", which started in the 12 October and lasted on 14 October.
The judicial adventures of the feta cheese started in 1996 with its inclusion by the European Commission to the European List of protected products.
Specific European countries referred to the European Court, which during 1999 with an ambiguous decision called upon the Commission to abstract the feta cheese from the protected products list.
A new Commission proposal to the Agriculture Council was followed and as the Council was unable to take a decision we concluded October's 2002 positive for the Greek feta course.
