About Masticha

Masticha (Mastic) is a 100% Greek product.
It is not produced in any other part of the world except Greece. More specific the original Masticha, is produced only in the southern part of the island of Chios in the 24 villages and communities known as "Mastichochoria" (literally "the mastic villages"), so it is better to talk about the "Chios Mastic".

Chios Mastic is protected by the European Union as an exclusively Greek product. The product comes from the mastic trees in transparent/opaque crystalline solid yellowish or originally slightly orange teardrop-shaped grains.
Its density is 1.06, its melting point is between 60C and 110C, and its acidity is between 50 and 70 grades. It has some slight taste to begin with but fades later, and is very sweet smelling.
Chios Mastic is known for many years and has always being produced in the traditional manner. It has medicinal, pharmaceutical and industrial applications.
There are different variations in the elaboration of Masticha; there is chewing gum named Masticha, drink named Masticha, and delicacy named Masticha.
The product comprises a significant source of agricultural income and foreign exchange for the island of Chios.
